MONTHLY DEVOTIONAL FOR 1 JULY

THE 1st OF JULY

WE NEED TO BE SPIRITUALLY ALERT

“But take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed (weighed down) with the giddiness and headache and nausea of self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries and cares pertaining to [the business of] this life, and [lest] that day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose;” – Luke 21:34

In this teaching, Jesus concludes His discourse on the end times with a crucial reminder for His disciples, urging them to live in constant expectation of judgment day, which He refers to as “that day.” This warning is equally relevant for us today. We are called to be vigilant, to watch over our hearts, and to live our lives with intentionality.

If we neglect our relationship with Jesus and fail to nourish our hearts with God’s Word daily, we risk becoming weary and gradually reverting to our old ways. Self-indulgence is a formidable enemy. As born-again believers indwelt by the Holy Spirit, we possess His fruit, including self-control. However, for the Holy Spirit’s fruit to manifest in our lives, we must be fully committed to the Lord, continually seeking more of Him, not just on Sundays, but at every opportunity, striving to remain in His presence.

Anything that controls us becomes an idol and a sin. When we allow worries and life’s concerns to dominate us instead of Jesus, we must recognize it and return to His leadership. We must do our best to avoid habitual worry and ensure we have time to repent and live rightly for Jesus.

SUGGESTED PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, please help me always to hunger for more of You. Guide me to walk the narrow path and never return to my old ways. Help me understand and apply Scripture daily, so I may mature spiritually and manifest the fruit of the Holy Spirit in my life. Strengthen me to control my carnal nature, avoid sin, and live rightly for You. Thank You, dear Lord, for continually helping me grow and become what You desire, ensuring I will be with You in heaven for all eternity. Praises and glory to Your holy Name. Amen
