TRUSTING THAT GOD ALWAYS FULFILLS HIS PROMISES
Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went to the top of Carmel, bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees. Then he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” So the servant went up, looked, and said, “There is nothing.” And seven times Elijah said, “Go again.” On the seventh time, the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’” In the meantime, the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel. – 1 Kings 18:41-45a
Elijah understood that once God had spoken, the rain was near, and the drought would soon end. However, the fulfillment of God’s word still required patience and faith. He confidently told Ahab that rain was coming, yet he bowed in prayer, persistently sending his servant seven times to look toward the sea, where signs of rain would first appear. The miracle did not happen instantly—it required unwavering faith until the moment the servant saw a small cloud forming.
When we hold on to God’s promises, backed by Scripture, we can stand firm in faith, resisting doubt and believing that we will receive according to His word. The promises in the Bible apply to all believers, and when we find two or three verses in context confirming what we ask, we can confidently apply 1 John 5:14: “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
Elijah had full confidence in God’s word and continued to declare what would happen. As soon as he heard about the small cloud, he urged Ahab to leave before the rain arrived. Since their chariots were uncovered and the roads were unpaved, heavy rain would make travel difficult. Elijah knew without a doubt that the rain was coming—and it did! His faith brought the long-awaited miracle, ending three and a half years of drought.
SUGGESTED PRAYER
Heavenly Father, how wonderful are Your promises! What a blessing it is to know that we can understand Your Will by studying Your Word. When You speak to us, we can be certain it is truly from You when it aligns with Scripture. Your ways are perfect, and Your presence is near. Help me grow in faith and trust in Your promises. Strengthen me to persevere in prayer, even when I do not see immediate results. May I follow the example of Elijah and all those in Scripture who stood firm in faith. Thank You for Your unfailing love and faithfulness. Glory and honor be to You, Father God. Amen
