THE 17th OF FEBRUARY
WE ARE MORE VULNERABLE TO FEAR WHEN WE ARE EXHAUSTED
And Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, including how he had put all the prophets to death with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” When Elijah heard this, he arose and fled for his life, going to Beersheba in Judah, where he left his servant behind. – 1 Kings 19:1-3
The darkness within Jezebel could not endure the light in Elijah. Even when all the people gathered on Mount Carmel, the queen remained in the city because she despised God and could not tolerate Elijah’s presence. She was responsible for the execution of the Lord’s prophets and had nurtured the 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah, whom Elijah had defeated. She recognized that God’s power was with Elijah and knew that as long as he remained, her own authority and life were at risk.
There are times in life when, no matter how mightily God has worked through us or how confident we feel, if we start believing the lies of the enemy, despair can take hold, making even thoughts of giving up seem like the only option. This happened to Elijah—one day, he was a vessel of God’s incredible power, and the next, he found himself drained, discouraged, and fearful.
To avoid such a downfall, we need humility, physical rest, and the constant renewal of our spirits through the Holy Spirit. Let us pray, worship with songs that proclaim God’s truth, and give thanks for all He has done, so we may enter His presence and be refreshed. If we strive to stay in right-standing with God and dwell in His presence, we will experience greater peace, joy, and hope.
SUGGESTED PRAYER
Dear Lord, please forgive me for any pride in my heart. Elijah faltered in his darkest moment, succumbing to fear and doubt. Help me to remain trusting and confident in You. May I be humble and grateful, never thinking of myself more highly than I should, nor believing that I achieve anything by my own strength. You alone deserve all glory, honor, and gratitude for every success in my life, for without You, I would not even have breath. Father God, teach me how to praise You and fill me anew with Your Holy Spirit, so I may obey Your will and live a life that pleases You. Amen
