IT’S EASIER TO AVOID CONFLICT THAN TO STOP
“The beginning of strife is like releasing water; therefore, stop contention before a quarrel starts.” Proverbs 17:14
When we begin arguing with someone, we might not have much to say at first. But as the disagreement progresses, we may end up saying hurtful things that we later regret. Human nature is prone to arguing, prioritizing its own needs, blaming others, and acting selfishly. On top of that, the enemy always seeks opportunities to sow division and destroy relationships, often putting more hurtful words in our mouths to prolong the conflict.
Solomon wisely advised stopping a quarrel before it begins, preventing tempers from flaring and the situation from escalating. The analogy of releasing water from a dam is powerful: a small break might only let a trickle out at first, but as the breach grows, water rushes out, potentially destroying the dam. Similarly, arguments can start small but quickly spiral out of control. Once spoken, words can’t be taken back, and they can cause deep wounds. Countless relationships have been damaged because the parties involved allowed the strife to continue unchecked.
SUGGESTED PRAYER
Thank You, Lord, for the wisdom in Your Word. You are the God of peace, unity, and love. Your Word encourages us to pursue peace with everyone and live in holiness, if we want to see You. Help me, Lord, to choose my battles wisely and avoid unnecessary conflict. I desire peace and joy, so teach me to prevent quarrels before they start and disturb my peace. I am grateful for the Holy Spirit, my Helper and Counselor, who teaches me how to act, allowing His fruit of peace, joy, love, self-control, and patience to flourish in my life. Thank You, Lord, in Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
