Psalm 4:8

7 June, 2024

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. – Psalm 4:8

Lord, Heavenly King, your Sovereignty is established over all the world, for you are Lord and Maker of all. In wakefulness and in sleep we pray that we may dwell and repose in you, for you to dwell in us, for it is only in you that we can rest, in the shelter of your shadow and the safety of your arms. We know that our slumber will be calm if we can feel your presence, near us and in us.

Many are the troubles of this persecuted and perverse earth, wherein our adversaries are plenty and our comrades few. It is only in you that we feel secure, and are composed, for it is only in you, that we can trust. All distractions and cares of the world vanish and lie low when we rest in you, for nothing can penetrate through the peace of your holy presence and the tranquility of your saving grace.

You, Lord, and you alone, can calm the storms of life and the stirring and turbulent waters of the challenges faced in the world. Through you we find solace and comfort and your mighty strength upholds us and gives us courage to fight our fears and our foes. We live, relying only on your favor and grace, for human valour or wisdom is deceptive. Though we are distressed and lonely, destitute and helpless, your promises never fail and your mercy never ceases. Lord, help us to retain and distribute the peace you have given us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
